SAINT LOUIS, MO – November 29 2023 – Keeley Construction was honored with a Keystone Award for their part in the tri-venture – Mortenson, Alberici, and Keeley Construction – that brought CITYPARK to St. Louis. The MAKjv tri-venture worked tirelessly to bring St. Louis its first professional soccer stadium in the bustling Midtown neighborhood. CITYPARK Stadium and Downtown West Campus, home to St. Louis CITY SC, is a multipurpose Major League Soccer campus complete with first-class pitch, year-round event space, training complex, and the Mill Creek Valley Monument. St. Louis CITY SC is one of the few U.S.-based teams in all professional sports, and the only MLS club, to have its stadium, team headquarters, training and performance center, and practice pitches in one centralized downtown location. The site also includes a fan retail pavilion and the team store. These new facilities advance CITY SC’s goal of building the best academy and development system in North America while activating growth for the Downtown West district.
In addition to creating a world-class home for the club and a hub for St. Louis’ thriving soccer community, the mixed-use district catalyzes downtown activity 365 days a year. Anchored by an expansive stadium that fits comfortably into its urban neighborhood, the complex features a 125,000-square-foot plaza to the east of the stadium that hosts gameday activities, public festivals, and other events. Designed by HOK in collaboration with Snow Kreilich Architects and built by the MAKjv, the 22,423-seat CITYPARK is open and transparent, with views out to the city from the seating bowl. The stadium provides an intimate fan experience at every price point, including general seating areas, the fanatical supporters’ club, and diverse premium offerings, including “four front doors” to welcome fans from every part of the city. “Mortenson | Alberici | Keeley is proud of our collective success building a world-class stadium for the St. Louis community,” said Logan Gerken, Vice President and General Manager for Mortenson. “Our team brought a unique blend of best-in-class national sports expertise combined with top local St. Louis building experience that was focused on empowering diversity, inclusion, and local businesses.”
As the first and only female majority-owned professional sports team, there was a focus on diversity and inclusion throughout the entire project. In doing so, the construction team exceeded both minority and women business enterprise goals that were established, awarding approximately $354 million dollars to WMBE firms. The project also fostered the next generation of workers with the project’s construction team composed of 24% minority and 18% apprentice workers. St. Louis CITY SC’s ownership group is 100% local with deep roots in the business, philanthropy, and soccer communities in St. Louis and beyond. The driving theme of the entire project has been “Built by the City, For the City”, with more than 162,000 craft hours completed by local St. Louis residents. Lastly, over 47% of the work onsite was self-performed by team members of the joint venture. The Mortenson | Alberici | Keeley JV team self-performed earthwork & deep utilities, concrete, steel fabrication & erection, precast, carpentry, low voltage, and final clean.
“We are humbled to be part of such a monumental project, partnering with an ownership team that is driven by a vision to positively impact the St. Louis community,” said Rusty Keeley, CEO of Keeley Companies. “This city is our home, and we are so excited for this endeavor to bring our region together for generations to come.”
Construction on CITYPARK began in March of 2020 and was completed in time for St. Louis CITY SC’s inaugural 2023 season in which the team set the record for most wins by an expansion team in MLS history. With a focus on creating a world-class sports facility, CITYPARK is a testament to the construction team’s expertise and dedication, and St. Louis CITY SC’s commitment to the St. Louis area. CITYPARK is leaving a lasting impact on the city and its residents, and the stadium and team have, in turn, been fully embraced by the St. Louis community.
The Associated General Contractors of America (AGC) Missouri Chapter hosts their Annual Keystone Awards honoring firms that exhibit excellence on projects where unusual circumstances were overcome or other project-specific requirements made successful completion noteworthy. The Keystone Awards are not given on beauty, but based on providing solutions to unique obstacles and challenges specific to the project. The Mortenson | Alberici | Keeley Construction Joint Venture is honored for CITYPARK to receive this special recognition.
